Discarded fish in European waters: general patterns and contrasts ArchiMer
Uhlmann, Sebastian S.; Van Helmond, Aloysius T. To reduce the practice of discarding commercially fished organisms, several measures such as a discard ban and extra allowances on top of landings quotas (“catch quota”) have been proposed by the European Commission. However, for their development and successful implementation, an understanding of discard patterns on a European scale is needed. In this study, we present an inter-national synthesis of discard data collected on board commercial, towed-gear equipped vessels operating under six different national flags spanning from the Baltic to the Mediterranean Seas mainly between 2003 and 2008. We considered discarded species of commercial value such as Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), European hake (Merluccius merluccius),...

Distribution of silver in mussels and oysters along the French coasts: Data from the national monitoring program ArchiMer
Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Auger, Dominique; Roux, Nathalie; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Santini, Anne.
Distribution and behavior of many trace elements in the aquatic environment has been well characterized, but little is known about silver (Ag) concentrations in coastal waters, even though this element ranks among the most toxic to marine invertebrates (Calabrese et al., 1977 ; Fisher and Hook, 1997 ; Webb and Wood, 1998). Studies conducted by Flegal et al. (1995), River-Duarte et al. (1999), and Ndung'u et al. (2001), provided the first valuable data on Ag distribution in the oceanic environment, indicating that this element is found in very low concentrations in the dissolved phase. However, although silver concentrations in coastal waters do not reach the nanomolar range (Smith and Flegal, 1993 ; Squire et al., 2002), formation of a stable chloro...

Do Consumers Want Public or Private Bodies to Monitor Animal Friendly Production and Marketing Schemes? And Does Trust Matter? AgEcon
Boecker, Andreas; Nocella, Giuseppe; Scarpa, Riccardo.
Producing according to enhanced farm animal welfare (FAW) standards increases costs along the livestock value chain, especially for monitoring certified animal friendly products. In the choice between public or private bodies for carrying out and monitoring certification, consumer preferences and trust play a role. We explore this issue by applying logit analysis involving socio-economic and psychometric variables to survey data from Italy. Results identify marked consumer preferences for public bodies and trust in stakeholders a key determinant.

Dynamics of an estuarine ecosystem - The Chesapeake Bay experience: Statistical approaches and water quality patterns ArchiMer
Alden, Rw.
A long-term water quality monitoring program has been established in the Virginian waters of the Chesapeake Bay. To date, over eight years of data have been analyzed to characterize spatio-temporal patterns and long-term trends in water quality. Complementary multivariate statistical procedures were employed to define spatial and seasonal patterns, while a series of non-parametric trend analyses were used for determining overall, site-specific, and season-specific long-term trends for water quality variables in the tributaries and mainstem of the Bay. Particular attention was focused on determining the effect of river flow on the trends, because flow rates in some of the tributaries have changed dramatically since the beginning of the monitoring program....

Ecological status of coralligenous assemblages: Ten years of application of the ESCA index from local to wide scale validation ArchiMer
Piazzi, L.; Gennaro, P.; Cecchi, E.; Bianchi, C.n.; Cinti, M.f.; Gatti, G.; Guala, I.; Morri, C.; Sartoretto, Stephane; Serena, F.; Montefalcone, M..
This paper aims at collating and reviewing all data collected using the ESCA (Ecological Status of Coralligenous Assemblages) index from 2009 to 2018 during different local applications, in order to evaluate at large spatial scale its effectiveness and temporal variability. To this scope, the large-scale response of ESCA to anthropogenic disturbance was tested comparing ESCA values calculated at 42 sites of the Western Mediterranean Sea with the anthropization index. Moreover, the sensitivity of ESCA to punctual human disturbance and the robustness of the index across the natural space and time variability were evaluated. The large spatial scale study showed significant correlation between ESCA and the anthropization index, while very low correlation was...

ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES FOR DAIRY COW CULLING MANAGEMENT OPTIONS AgEcon
Ott, Stephen L..
Due to a lack of national information about cull dairy cows, the USDA's National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) Dairy '96 Study investigated culling management practices. Operations included in the study represented 83.1 percent of U.S. milk cows. Most dairy cows were culled for reasons associated with their inability to profitably produce high-quality milk and calves; reasons for culling were not usually related to ill health or systemic disease. Results showed that almost all cull dairy cows in the US are intended for beef slaughter, as only about 4.4 percent were sent to other dairy operations. Nearly 77 percent of cows intended for beef slaughter were sent to markets, auctions, and sale barns, while 22 percent were sent straight to slaughter...

Economic survey to support control decision for old world bollworm on processing tomatoes Scientia Agricola
Sousa,Nayara Cristina Magalhães; Michereff-Filho,Miguel; Moita,Antônio Williams; Silva,Karla Fernanda Ayres de Souza; Silva,Paloma Alves; Torres,Jorge Braz.
ABSTRACT: Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) regularly requires quick deployment of control practices due to its potential of causing yield loss of processing tomatoes. The monitoring of H. armigera adults using stick traps lured with sex pheromone was correlated to egg densities, larvae, and percentage of damaged fruits, aiming to subsidize control decisions only using the number of males caught in the traps since surveying pest stages or damaged fruits is laborious and costly. Surveys were carried out on 11 tomato fields (ca. 80 to 120 hectares each) for processing during the 2015 and 2016 crop seasons. The survey was initiated at the flowering stage with traps set up along the field borders 100 m distant each. Evaluations of adult male capture in the traps...

Effets climatiques sur les écosystèmes marins. Exemple du recrutement des Crustacés Cirripèdes sur la côte ouest du Cotentin ArchiMer
Dreves, Luc.
A nuclear power plant is set up at Flamanville (Channel; West coast of the Cotentin). For monitoring studies, one species (or a group of species) has been chosen in each major unit for a reference population dynamics study. Hard bottoms are covered by several species of barnacles. These species present different temperature affinities, and have reached here an equilibrium stage. The recruitment period of Balanus balanoides, the main species, has been determined. A relationship is established between the wintry temperature and the numerical importance of its spring recruitment.

Energetic status of crossbreed dairy cows during transition period in two different seasons Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Moreira,T. F.; Facury Filho,E. J.; Meneses,R. M.; Mendonça,F. L. M.; Lima,J. A. M.; Carvalho,A. U..
ABSTRACTWe used 31 crossbreed dairy cows to compare the energetic profile in summer and winter. Blood samples were taken weekly prepartum, at calving and on days 2, 5, 10, 15, 21 and 30 postpartum. All metabolic indicators analyzed were influenced by the physiological status. The glucose concentrations were higher during winter while the triglyceride concentrations and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were higher in the summer. The season influenced the concentrations of cholesterol, AST and GGT, showing a different pattern between summer and winter. Non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and beta-hidroxibutirate (BHB) were not influenced by the season. Cows that calved during winter had a greater body condition score (BCS) and lost more BCS until calving. During...

Establishment and data analysis of sea-state monitoring system along Taiwan coast. OceanDocs
Feng, Xiangbo; Wang, Hao; Yan, Yixin.
Taiwan Island is at the joint of Eurasian Continent and Pacific Plate, under threatening of typhoons and northeasterly strong winds. Consequently, enormous human lives and properties are lost every year. It is necessary to develop a coastal sea-state monitoring system. This paper introduces the coastal sea-state monitoring system (CSMS) along Taiwan coast. The COMC (Coastal Ocean Monitoring Center in National Cheng Kung University) built the Taiwan coastal sea-state monitoring system, which is modern and self-sufficient, consisting of data buoy, pile station, tide station, coastal weather station, and radar monitoring station. To assure the data quality, Data Quality Check Procedure (DQCP) and Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) were developed by the COMC....

Estimation of alluvial recharge in the semiarid REA
Andrade,Tafnes S.; Montenegro,Suzana M. G. L.; Montenegro,Abelardo A. de A.; Rodrigues,Diogo F. B..
In areas where there is irrigated agriculture, the recuperation of water reserves in alluvial aquifers may occur preferentially due to precipitation. Recharging can be evaluated from variation information of water depth measured in piezometers or observation wells. Thus, the aim of this research is to study the recharge in the alluvial aquifer formed by the Mimoso temporary stream in the semiarid region of Pernambuco (PE), Brazil, using the method of the fluctuation of the water level. This system is typical on the Brazilian Northeast semiarid region, using groundwater for domestic supply and for irrigation on small scale agriculture. Monthly potentiometric levels and rainfall data were used. The selected period for the study, from January 2002 to October...

Etude des mortalités ostréicoles de l'hiver 1998/1999 en Baie des Veys. Caractérisation et analyse temporelle des dessalures observées sur les parcs conchylicoles de la baie de Veys depuis 1996. ArchiMer
Ropert, Michel; Kopp, Joel.
The Shellfish Laboratory of Normandy (LCN : Laboratoire Conchylicole de Normandie) observed unusual hydrologic anomalies associated with important oyster mortalities during the winter of 1999. These anomalies were described as sudden salinity variations during the lidal cycle, particularly on the rising tide. Starting in 1996 a multi-parameter probe was used to monitor salinity, temperature and depth every 10 to 20 minutes in the inter-tidal zone. Alter data processing and filtering, two criteria concerning low salinity were chosen : amplitude and duration. Application of a cumulative function (Ibanez et al., 1993) to this time series data treatment showed the 3 year trend (1996-1999). Salinity variation data and climatic data were used in a multivariate...

Evaluation of FluoroProbe® performance for the phytoplankton-based assessment of the ecological status of Mediterranean coastal lagoons ArchiMer
Garrido, Marie; Cecchi, Philippe; Malet, Nathalie; Bec, Beatrice; Torre, Franck; Pasqualini, Vanina.
The European Water Framework Directive and several other legislations worldwide have selected phytoplankton for monitoring the ecological status of surface waters. This assessment is a complicated task in coastal lagoons due to their intrinsic variability, prompting moves to use real-time measurements. Here, we tested the ability of the submersible spectrofluorometer FluoroProbe® to accurately estimate the phytoplankton biomass and to efficiently discriminate spectral groups in Mediterranean coastal lagoons, by using sub-surface water samples (n = 107) collected at Biguglia lagoon (Corsica) in different environmental situations (salinity and trophic state) from March 2012 to December 2014. We compared the estimates of biomass and phytoplankton group...

Exploring Environmental DNA (eDNA) to Assess Biodiversity of Hard Substratum Faunal Communities on the Lucky Strike Vent Field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge) and Investigate Recolonization Dynamics After an Induced Disturbance ArchiMer
Cowart, Dominique; Matabos, Marjolaine; Brandt, Miriam; Marticorena, Julien; Sarrazin, Jozee.
Deep ocean hydrothermal vent ecosystems face physical disturbances from naturally occurring volcanic and tectonic activities and are at increasing risk of mineral resource exploitation, raising concerns about the resilience of endemic biological communities. Following destructive events, efficient and rapidly applicable surveys of organisms are required to monitor the state, evolution and a possible return of these ecosystems to their original baseline status. In this study, we explored the environmental DNA (eDNA) approach as a tool (1) to assess biodiversity of benthic communities associated with deep-sea hard substrata and (2) tracked the recolonization dynamics of benthic invertebrate communities living on the Montségur edifice within the Lucky Strike...

FAO, Fishery Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) and the Control of Illegal Fishing OceanDocs
Everett, G.V..
In response to the introduction of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) and at the time when the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) was about to be adopted, FAO organised in 1981 in Rome an Expert Consultation on Monitoring, Control and Surveillance for Fisheries Management. Experts from 12 major fishing nations participated and the recommendations of the Consultation were later adopted by the FAO's Committee on Fisheries, forming since then the basic policy of the Organisation with regard to MCS.
